The investigation into all the recent events, while still in its primary phase, was going slower than Annora would have liked. Except for a few, all other investigations took a back seat to the attack by the Svikari and the connected break in to the project offices. So far none of their prisoners were offering up information, but she suspected most were simply pawns with little to offer anyway. Reviewing what details were available, Annora was interrupted by a knock on the door.
“Excuse me Lieutenant, but there’s something on the news feed you’ll want to see. Fuliar is interviewing Mr Raddon about the attacks.”
Pulling up the interview on a monitor, Annora motioned to an empty chair.
“Come on in Chief, let’s see what he has to say.”
The two quietly watched the interview until they broke to reply the transmission from Captain Tetsuro. At which point, Chief Petersen spoke up.
“He’s right on one thing. For this attack to have occurred right under our noses with no perceivable warning is unusual. It also makes Starfleet look bad, although right now that’s the least of our worries.”
The interview continued with the reporter asking Mr Raddon about rumored visits to his establishment, and a possible link with the Free Earth Movement. Didn’t really reveal anything, but Annora didn’t expect someone like Raddon to be tripped up by a news interview.
“Somehow I don’t see him as a unifying force on this station, nor one that promotes leadership. As for the visits, we’re positive members of the crew visited places run by the Raddon corporation. However, a simple visit isn’t enough to prove anything despite his distaste of all things non-human."
The rest of the interview went as expected, with Mr Raddon expressing sympathy for the lives lost and wishing he could have met with the Captain before hand.
Next up was the Cardassian Ambassador, which might yield a few clues as to the government’s response to the attacks. At the end, the two security officers discussed the interview.
“What do you think Chief, any surprises from the Cardassians?”
As he had fought in the Dominion War, Annora felt he had a better idea than her on the merits of Cardassia’s response.
“Not really. As the Svikari claimed to be operating on behalf of the Free Earth Movement and not Starfleet, it would make little political sense to respond with force. Especially so soon after the attack, and with close to two decades of peace with The Federation. Plus, they don’t exactly have a strong track record against us militarily. I think if we make a sincere and transparent effort in our investigation, it should help cool any flared tempers.”
With a sigh, Annora turned off the monitor.
“Thanks Chief. Let’s hope you’re right, and that this Free Earth Movement doesn’t strike again."
