Interlude - Day 3

Major Cenn could not help but have a lump in his throat as the USS Horizon came into visual range of the Bajoran wreckage. He had to fight himself not to fall to his knees and cry out to the Prophets for salvation. He knew that doing that would make him seem weak in front of the Starfleet Crew and that was not something he wanted, so he remained silent and stoic as he watched the scene open up before them.
Captain D'Nar Turrom sat quietly in his chair as he observed the Bajoran visitor take in the image on the viewscreen. The Escort-class vessel USS Horizon had accepted the search and rescue mission of the Bajoran vessel. However, he knew that based upon the information he had been given, this was going to be more of a Search and Retrieval of bodies and other remains as opposed to Rescuing any survivors. Be that as it may, Captain Turrom wanted Major Cenn to prepare himself for the inevitable.
"OPS, begin scanning the immediate area for any distress signals or. . .vital signs." The Farsian Captain said, although not hopeful.
"Aye sir, begin short-range scans now." Ensign Kal'ree said from her console.
"What do you expect us to find?" Captain Turrom asked the Major.
"A weapons signature would be nice." The Major forced out, without making eye contact with anyone. "And the crew surviving."
Captain Turrom sighed. "Well, we can continue to hold out hope but. . .I don't think it is too likely that we'll find survivors out here." He said as he continued to observe the view screen.
Without responding to the statement, Major Cenn ned and spoke. "We should stop here and start detailed scans of the area."
"Helm, all stop, Tactical begin scanning the wreckage for weapons signature so we can determine who fired on whom and what exactly happened during the firefight. Major Cenn, it appears that there are no life signs within the wreckage, are there any additional searches or procedures you think would be beneficial at this juncture?" Captain Turrom asked, understanding how difficult and defeating this must be to the Bajoran.
"During the Occupation, the Resistance had ways to mask lifesigns in debris fields so that Cardassian's couldn't find them." He thought a moment. "I'll have the Anor scan for those signatures." He looked around.
"Sir, I'm detecting Cardassian warp signatures, it appears multiple vessels were in the sector, but they left before we arrived. I'm detecting a small cluster just 7 light years away." The Tactical Officer reported.
Captain Turrom raised a brow. "It's possible those are the vessels that were involved in the earlier incident." he said to Major Cenn. "Do you wish to reach out to them while we're here or would you rather your Embassy use diplomatic channels?" He asked the guest.
"I'll relay the information to the Ambassador." He looked to the Captain. "For now let's try to find the Ship's Black Box."
The crew on the bridge began to work in earnest to search the area under the specified parameters. Captain Turrom took a seat back in his chair as he sat back and allowed his crew to diligently work.
[20 min later]
"Captain, I think I might've found something 50 kilometers from the largest piece of debris." The Operations Officer reported.
"On screen," Captain Turrom said as he stepped closer to the viewscreen.
"Major Cenn, what are we looking at?" he asked
Major Cenn crossed to the Ops Station and checked the sensor reading. "That's our Black Box alright. It'll have all the sensor and log data from the B'hala." He sounded almost jovial.
Captain Turrom nodded for Helm to take the vessel closer for a better examination.
"Sir, it's readings seem to match the known configuration of Bajoran data recorder." The Operations Officer reported. "However, I am reading a significant amount of damage to it. I appears that there was someone did not want it to be recovered in tact." He added.
"Hmm...I guess that would make sense if the same vessel that destroyed the B'hala also wanted to make sure nobody could find out what was going on." Captain Turrom stated.
"Your thoughts Major?" He asked.
Desc's face was stern. "Beam it aboard, we'll salvage whatever information we can from it."
Captain Turrom nodded to his Tactical Officer. Within a few moments, the vessel had lowered its shields and transported the device onboard to be examined.
"Sir, the device is currently secure in cargo bay 4." The Tactical Officer reported.
A'ight...are we done here?" The Captain asked the Major
Major Cenn shot the Captain a look. "I suppose we are." He crossed his arms. "Inform the Anor That we will be returning to Deep Space Five."
The Captain took his seat and gave the nod to the OPS Officer to send the message. "Alright, let's head out of here and get some answers." He said.
