Ahjess wanted to be anywhere but chained to a biobed. He wanted someone to find him, rescue him. He wanted to be able to fight back. Wanted to scream, though he was hoarse. Wanted to die, just to escape. His hand ached, and the blistered patch was white and oozing. He wanted pain killers. He'd cheerfully have the whole thing taken off right now. But more than anything he wanted a drink.
He was stronger now, he could feel the drugs and the stimfield putting some life back into him. He'd need to hit the gym when he got out of here, get some definition back. Then he giggled. The things that popped into your head. How long had it been since Hex had left him. He felt drunk with sleep deprivation, knew he'd only slept a few moments here an there, lulled into it by the steady rise and fall of the sectional mattress The cuffs holding him down were padded, but he still had red marks of friction burns where he'd tried and failed to pull free.
He had to get out, Help wasn't coming and if Hex came back he'd be worse than dead, but even his returning strength wasn't enough. And he was going to die. Not straight away. But he'd have a living death with Hex, if she was right, if she really did have full control. And then she'd either get him killed, or move on, and hosts didn't live long once their symbionts were taken out or died.
There was nothing loose along the sides of the biobed he could use. Nothing he could reach. Nothing he could see. Nothing he could do.
And the door creaked open. "Morning sleepy head." Hex pushed in a gurney, rolled it flush tight to the side of the biobed he lay on. There were two sets of shackles piled on it, one at each end, and in the middle was a few instruments he didn't recognise. And a laser scalpel.
"Please don't do this!" His voice was raspy, his throat dry, but he suddenly found himself crying. He didn't think he had the moisture left in his body.
Hex only smiled, walking around to brush a tear away. Then she unplugged the drips, and tugged the needle from his hand without much care. "Don't worry about anything." She reached down past the sill of the bio bed and a restraining field sprung up around him, pinning his hips and shoulders, holding him firm, though his lower arms were free. She checked it again, adjusted the height of the controls. She had to be able to let herself up, after all. Next she picked up the sterilizer and used it to rub down his stomach. Then she used a hypospray to numb the area.
She stepped back, and shrugged off her jacket, then she stripped off the rest until she was naked. "Like what you see?" Hex twisted and turned, showing Ahjess the body she was about to vacate, "Its not going to last long once I leave. She's screaming in here." Hex said conversationally. "She knows what's coming next."
"What's going to happen to her?" Ahjess croaked.
"I don't want to spoil the surprise." Hex picked up the laser scalpel, prodded at his stomach with two fingers until she found the spot. "Have you ever wondered how we discovered we could join? Have you ever wondered how desperate my ancestors must have been to climb inside a dying meatsuit? You had to have been dying. Have you seen what we look like. Who in their right mind was going to let one climb in when they had the power to stop us?"
She found the spot she was looking for, and fired up the scalpel. "Maybe they thought you were food?" She lowered the scalpel and cut into his abs drawing it down to open his pouch. Hex pulled herself up on the gurney, and locked the first pair of manacles around her ankles. "Trust me, when we're done, you'll understand." Then she carefully cut the same line in her own stomach. Blood welled along the line, and then Ahjess saw her skin split apart and the bulbous head of the symbiont pressed itself against the wound, the sides of it framing the protrusion. "This is me. Soon it will be you."
Hex lay back, and took a moment to look at Ahjess. "Don't cry." She locked one wrist into a shackle. "In a few moments, you wont care about anything. Not for years." She snapped the second cuff into place.
As Ahjess watched the bulbous end of the symbiont wiggled, and squirmed, and slowly backed out of the spot it had occupied. As the long tail emerged, the body Hex had been occupying began to heave in ragged breaths and letting them out as sobs.
Then the symbiont was out and the woman it had occupied was screaming, and thrashing as it crawled over her bleeding body, leaving a trail of blood and ichor as it inched towards Ahjess. She bucked in the chains, which only ended tipping up the symbiont off her and closer to Ahjess, and causing more blood to slip from her stomach. .
Ahjess felt it touch his hip, moist and slug like. His skin crawled and his stomach lurched. "Hey, hey!" what was her name? "Remalia, wasn't it? We're both going to die if you don't help me." Hex had dropped the laser scalpel by her head. If the woman could just reach it. "Remalia, I need you to grab the scalpel. Can you reach?"
Remalia looked round wildly, felt her head bump against it, and she pulled at the length of her chains, trying to nudge it up to her fingers. She was grey to look at, and he realised it would be a toss up what killed her, the rough cut that Hex had used to escape, or the lack of the symbiont itself. Unless they could get out quickly, she'd die in a few hours from loss of symbiosis.
"That's good," Ahjess said, conscious that Hex itself was now crawling over his groin and heading for the cut in his abdomen. "You're almost there, just push it to the left a bit, and it will be in your fingers."
Remalia twisted as best she could, pulling in an pushing with her head and it moved towards the woman's hand at roughly the same speed as Hex was making a bee line for his stomach. Ahjess risked a glance down and saw the symbiont/parasite turn around so its long worming tail was pointing straight at the cut.
He couldn't twist or turn away. "Hurry!" he urged her, watching her fumble for it. The tip of the symbiont's tail was probing the edges of his wound now.
Remalia strained at the limits of her own chains, took a deep breath. And got the tips of her fingers on the scalpel.
"Faster," Ahjess begged, feeling the ropey tendril of the symbiont's tail slide inside him until only the bulbous head was still outside him.
Remalia got a better grip, pulling the scalpel into her trembling palm. Ahjess only screamed as the board head of the symbiote pushed its way into the cut, forcing itself all the way inside.
Remalia thumbed the scalpel on, twisted her wrist and the short length of blade projected cut through the chain holding her wrist. She sat up, brought her hand round to stab it down.
And Hex caught her arm. Remalia screamed. Hex squeezed, forcing her back. Free of the forcefield, he rolled on top of her, slamming her hand back on the gurney, once twice, until the scalpel fell from her frozen fingers.
Hex leaned over her, holding her down with his body. Remalia started crying. It was over. She'd lost, and she knew what was going to happen to her. "Hush now." Hex purred, with Ahjess' voice, stroking Ahjess' fingers down her cheeks. "No need for that." He reached down to one of the other tools lying next to her body, a dermal generator, and used it to closing the wound in his stomach, and sealing himself inside his new host.
"You've only got a few hours left, now I'm out of you." He shifted his legs, digging his knees down between hers, prying her thighs apart. "You can go out feeling good. Or you can go out hurting. Makes no odds to me. I'm going to be there, either way. So what will it be?"
Remalia turned her face away, tears streaming, but she didn't struggle. Realising what Hex was going to do, trapped inside his own body, a helpless witness, unheard by anyone but himself, Ahjess began to scream and didn't stop.
