Mission: Rumours
Location: Transport to DS5
Timeline: MD2 1930

ON:

Sipping at his hot and still steaming Darjeeling, Mikk looked at the monitor in his cabin. His daughter Alarra lay fast alseep on one of the beds and he used the time contacting an old friend from his time at the Academy – Ella Brown, who was a science officer on boards Starbase 224 where he had been serving for some years now.

Over the years he worked on the starbase they both had become close friends. Especially after his girlfriend had left both him and their daughter, she had been a tremendous help and crutch for him. He would even go so far as to call her his best friend.
Now with his new posting on DS5, he needed her help. His daughter had not been overly enthusiastic about the change to put it mildly. Since they had entered the transport to DS5, she had not spoken a word with her father. Not that this was that unusual for a 14-year-old girl, but this time it seemed to be more serious than before.

Now that the subspace link had been established, Ella smiled at her old friend.
“Good morning, Mikk. Gee, you look as if you hadn’t had any sleep last night.”, she greeted her old friend.

Mikk rolled his eyes. “Charming as ever, but to be honest, you’re right. I didn’t get much sleep last night.”
Ella looked at him sympathetically. “How did she take it?”

Mikk took a deep breath looking at his sleeping daughter, then back towards the screen showing his concerned friend. "Not too well, I’m afraid. She is sad and can’t really understand why I did take that posting."

Ella nodded knowingly. “Well, understandable from her point of view, don’t you think. I mean, she had to leave what she considered home and not to forget her friends. That is not easy for a girl of her age.”

“Ever thought of changing into counselling?”, Mikk asked.

Ella looked at him with a dead serious look. “Starfleet couldn’t afford to pay me. I’m too good.”
They both grinned as Mikk took another sip of his tea.

“It is not easy for me either. I also have to leave some good friends behind, you know? I think you know them.” He winked, then went on. “I mean, on the one hand this is the chance I waited for. A step up in my career. On the other hand though…”
Mikk stopped in the middle of his sentence, but Ella knew exactly what he wanted to say.

“Family is the most important thing. I know that. You always said home is where your family is and I know that Alarra believes that as well. Hell, you’ve been a great father. Definitely better than mine.”

He knew her story and that she had been raised by her mum. Her dad had never really cared for her. A few years ago it would have made her furious, but now it only made her sad.

“If you asked Alarra at the moment she would probably disagree there.”, Mikk added.

“Of course! What do you expect of her? For a girl of her age that will probably be the end of her life and the worst thing she could have imagined. And you are responsible for that. Face it, you are terrible ”, Ella added and grinned. "Maybe I should tell her that it does not make sense to protest as you can be a real pain in the neck if you really want to have something like that step up in your career.”

Mikk chuckled. “Thanks … again. You’ve got your charming day today, haven’t you?”

“Hey, I’m just telling the truth. But listen. Things will soon be okay again. Just give her some time. After all everything will be knew for her there: new people, a new station a whole new situation. And she really loves you, you know that. I always found that you tow were a really good team.”

Now Mikk smiled at his old friend. “Thanks again. It's the same for me. Don't worry, we'll stick together.”
“Alright. And don't forget to stay in contact with me. I can also be a real pain in the neck, you know?”, she warned him.
“Sure will. Hope to see you soon again. Bye”

The screen showed the Federation symbol again before it went black. Mikk turned towards his sleeping daughter and whispered towards himself.
“I hope you're right.”
