688 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Doors of Perception
Location: Promenade Security Office
Timeline: MD05 1215

Yolanthe was a pale azure, enjoying seeing the girl get some payback for all her weeks of deception. "Where is he? Where's my boy?" That was what she was here for. "No point in denying any of it any more. You saw him the night he disappeared, and you saw him at some point since then. You've got know him at least a little bit to lock lips like that."

“No!” Aleczandra cried out. “No! I told you! God!” She pushed back her rainbow hair. What the fuck had she been doing?

Zandra took a breath. “Look, I...I sometimes...black out,” she said quietly. “I wake up and I’m not where I was. I don’t know what happened.”

Caleb blinked. “What?”

Zandra pointed at the screen. “I don’t remember doing that,” she said.

"Oh, come on," Yolanthe said scornfully. "He's not that forgettable."

Aleczandra stared daggers at Yolanthe. “Yes, I remember meeting Ahjess on the Promenade there,” she said, pointing at the screen again. “I remembered him from the Box and the Missing Persons holos you put up. But I’d never said two words to him before this. He wasn’t making any sense. Talked to me like I was someone else. I don’t remember anything after that. I certainly don’t remember that! I was dating someone at the time. I wouldn’t have done that! I came around later in my room, no idea how I’d gotten there.” She shook her head.

“Zandy,” Caleb said quietly, “how long have these blackouts been happening?”

Aleczandra looked nervous and guilty, not meeting their eyes. “A...A while,” she said. “I...the first time was during the station evacuation, on the Ferengi ship, when I…” She didn’t complete the sentence. There were plenty of rumors of what had happened on that ship going around the station.

"Blackouts?" Yolanthe frowned. "Convenient. I wonder if what you get up to 'blacked out' is why people are asking about you." She thought about it. "Is there any way of recovering your memories? Maybe knowing what you did will tell me where my boy is."

“I...I don’t know,” Aleczandra said defensively. “I’m not a psychologist or whatever.”

“This is serious, Aleczandra,” Caleb said, the worry clear in his voice and face. He wasn’t Commander Ryan, Executive Officer anymore. Now he was Caleb Ryan, Father. “We were warned to watch out for blackouts.”

“Yeah, but that was two years ago, after the...accident!” Aleczandra said, giving Yolanthe a glance.

“You should have told me!” Caleb exclaimed.

Aleczandra fidgeted a bit, looking away.

Yolanthe folded her arms, now a dark gold in frustration. "So what now?" she asked Caleb. She knew that Aleczandra wasn't considered an adult by Human standards, even if she was by Bokkai ones. "Can you do anything to get her memories back, or even find where my boy went after...that photo was taken."

“We can definitely send his image through the same search engines we used for the Trill woman,” Caleb told Yolanthe. “As for Zandy’s memories...Ah don’t know. Ah can talk to the Counseling department maybe.”

“Great. More head shrinking,” Aleczandra muttered, crossing her arms in a teenage pout.

"I think your cameras will be faster than Little Miss Helpful," Yolanthe said. "If Ahjess is still here I want to try and talk to him before he changes his mind and gets on a boat. Ship. Whatever."

Caleb nodded. He turned back to the computer and started another search, this time for Ahjess’ face. They had done it before, when he was first reported missing, but he’d dropped off the station sensors.

Aleczandra just glared at Yolanthe. “Maybe he has good reason to want to leave,” she accused. “Maybe you should just leave him alone.”

"Shush. The grown ups are talking." Yolanthe turned back to the girls father. "Thank you. It might not work. But I won’t forgive myself if I haven't tried."
