With everything that happens at DS5 its easy to overlook a dedicated and stalwart character going about his daily business. Caleb has been just that, keeping his mind on the job when his daughter was 'kidnapped' by the Ferengi, harbouring her secret, and still able to lend a kind ear to the CO while under house arrest. |

This is not the first time Caleb has been nominated for an NPC award. This award applies both to his Ferengi NPCs which are vividly played and to the Caleb's daughter, a Trill teenager with a secret, all of whom are adding a different, complicated and sometimes icky dimension to the story. |

The twisting turns of the tragedy of Caleb and his daughter is finally reaching a head, after being hinted at for the last three years. Its been a bit of a roller-coaster as the long dead personalities have taken turns at invading Aleczandra's thoughts and feelings, and now Caleb's selfish actions on Risa are coming home to roost. We've yet to see how things will turn out, but we have reached the point of no return and look forward to a resolution as complex, diverting and intriguing as the build up. |

Matt has developed Caleb from man in pain in more that one way. A dedicated, physically wounded career officer and family man who had lost his wife and had to cope with his daughter alone and through their combined grief, to someone who gradually found a desire to recover from his lonely choices and get back up onto 'the romance horse', so to speak. The gentle, thoughtful, progress that Caleb has made has been done in a sensitive way to allow for the reaction of his only child and her adjustment to his moving on, and also with a lot of self analysis about what he is doing, why and how he ought or ought not to proceed. It's a very touching and talented story, played out and given feeling and life in ways that are realistic and complicated but still compassionate to all sides. Mastery at its best. A real work of merit without a doubt and with so much promise to come as well. |

October 2018: Goes to Caleb for bringing his long running plot arc to its crisis and his grief driven bad decision four years ago finally comes back to haunt him and the full consequences of what he has done to his own daughter comes to light. |

I believe the amount of time and detail he has put into developing the relationship between Commander Ryan and his psychotic daughter Aleczandra is commendable. It is interesting to see him struggling with the secret that he cares and the fear that his daughter may be losing control of her own sanity. Writing for one character is hard enough, but writing for multiple on a consistent basis is even harder. |
