760 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Rumours
Location: Starship Matthias
Timeline: MD 9 - 0600

"Captain, Mr. Raddon's shuttle has successfully docked with the Matthias." The Conn Officer announced from her vessel.

"Very well, Tabitha, activate passive stealth mode, monitor for any outside scans." Captain Dante Hanks said from his chair. "We want to make sure to avoid any prying eyes." Captain Hanks said to his bridge crew.

"Contact Jefferies down in Security and let them know that our guests have arrived and they should be directed to the conference room." Captain Hanks said.

"Aye, sir" the Conn Officer responded.

"We have sat by for too long and allowed the rising tide of disrespect of our kind to rise to the level of contempt. . ." Melvyn Raddon, Owner and Chief Executive Officer of Raddon Corps. said as he stood before the individuals gathered at the conference table. "We have tried to practice patience. . .and even restraint at the attacks that have come against us." He added. "But the time of cowardly inaction has come to an end." He said firmly.

"What did you have in mind?" Dorian Gabriel, Head of Raddon Corp Security asked from his seat at the table.

"First of all, that station is an integral part of our plans both in this sector and on the planet Pangaea." Melvyn replied. "That station is the Watchtower over the planet and its resources." He added.

"Right, but it belongs to Starfleet. How can we do anything with Starfleet in firm control over it? They control the phasers, and their phasers are bigger and more numerous than ours." Dorian pointed out. Sensing the tension in the room, Dorian decided to answer the unasked question. "I'm pointing this out not because I'm afraid of them, but because of my experience as a Senior Security Officer who is well aware of the station's tactical capabilities." He said strongly. "And even furthe----"

"I agree." Melvyn interupted.

"ther....what?" Dorian asked, caught off-guard.

"I said I agree. There is no way that we can directly take over the vastly overpowered installation. That's why we won't try, we'll let the Federation Council do it for us?" He said assuredly.

"Why would the Federation Council intervene in a Starfleet Installation?" Raymond Raddon, Melvyn's son, inquired.

"They'll do so when they see the absolute chaos that has erupted on this station under the incompetent leadership of that Trill." Melvyn said as he activated the console.

"Between the Cardassian Tactical fleet parked right outside the station's door and the brewing civil unrest on the station's promenade, it will become painfully obvious to any out-side observer that the Starfleet is not capable of handling the administrative affairs of the station and that the Federation should appoint an Administrator to oversee ongoing operations." Melvyn said.

"and that just so happens to be you?" Dorian asked incredulously.

"Me? Really?" Melvyn laughed in response. "Do I strike you as being that vain and transparent?" He responded. "Of course it wouldn't be me, Federation Envoy Hilliard Braxton is the best candidate.(***)" Melvyn said.

"How do you know the Cardassians and the new Commander won't just come to a resolution before anything worse happens." Dorian asked.

"Simple, we've already taken several steps to nudge both sides in the direction we want." Raymond said with a knowing smile. "In fact, I think someone has already paid a 'polite' visit to the girlfriend of the Chief Diplomat and asked her to help persuade him to back off the Cardassian situation." Raymond said.

"Do you honestly believe she'll actually convince him to do that?" Dorian asked in disbelief.

"No, we expect that he will react immediately and accusing the Cardassians of assault and intimidation. They'll of course be offended, followed by a vociferous denial and response." Raymond responded.

"So that's it? We just sit back and watch the giants fight each other while the Humans suffer as the casualties on the station?" Dorian asked.

"Dorian. . ." Melvyn began to say in a pained expression. "I know that you were close to Ranjell and her death. . ." Melvyn paused as he tried to find the words.

"Her death will not go unavenged." Melvyn said. "We will find the bastards who took her away and we will make them experience the same pain that you have." He said solemnly as he approached the man and put his hand on his shoulder.

"Trust me, Dorian...trust me when I say that everything we do is for the betterment of everyone of us." He said.
