Mission: Pangaea (Wrap up)
Location: Main Security
Timeline: MD8 1100

Lieutenant Si'Lar Trellis waited before he heard the voice beckon him into the office of the Chief of Security. The irony was not lost on him that this previously belonged to him, although the Powers That Be never intended for him to be there for very long. Regardless, he was an officer of Starfleet and he had an obligation to follow the lawful commands of all those who had been appointed superior to him.

"Sir, I have updated my After Action Report for the hostage rescue on board the Ferengi vessel," he said as he approached the other man’s desk and placed the padd on top of it. "I have also ordered the brig to begin inmate transport for the Ferengi pirates we captured onboard the vessel," Trellis reported. "I'll just need you to sign off on everything," he added.

Caleb took up the padd and gave it a cursory look. He rubbed his eyes and set it down again. “No,” he said simply. “We’re not sending the Ferengi anywhere.”

Trellis was caught off-guard by the denial. The confusion was obvious on the Trill's face. "Excuse me, sir? If I may ask, why are we not transporting them to Starbase 253 for a military tribunal? Larceny, kidnapping, and piracy are very serious offenses," Trellis spoke.

“Of course they are,” Caleb said, “if they occur in Federation territory. And none of which was the case in this situation,” he said, leaning back in his chair. “Ah don’t doubt that your report is fine, and very thorough and accurate,” he told Trellis, “but the fact of the matter is we have a serious diplomatic FUBAR that has landed in mah lap and just might cost me mah job.” He wasn’t going to foist the problem off on Trellis, who was following orders. Caleb should have done more to change or alleviate the captain’s order to assault a Ferengi ambassador. “The fact of the matter, Mr. Trellis, is that the Ferengi saved all those kids from the possible destruction of the station and we went in and shot ‘em up for it, putting those same children in more danger.”

Trellis' jaw tightened as he tried to restrain his initial response from being that of an outburst to something more…diplomatic.

"Sir, I do not believe you are being totally objective in this matter," he said initially, pausing slightly to gather his next sentence. "If this is about your daughter, I can amend my report to minimize her behavior with the Ambass--" he said before being cut-off by the other Trill.

Caleb’s face stiffened and he sat forward. “Mah daughter’s behavior has no bearin’ on the facts of what we did,” he said, his voice tight and even. “Nor is it relevant! Rumors and gossip have no reason to be in that report regardless. And there were no such admissions in her debriefing.” Caleb restrained himself from literally throwing the junior officer from his office for his implications.

Her debriefing...the same debriefing that neither he nor any other senior investigator was present to attend. Trellis thought to himself. The younger Trill couldn't understand why the Security Chief was being so defensive. Of all people who should recognize the importance of maintaining the integrity of a security investigation, surely the Chief of Station Security would. What exactly was he trying to protect or prevent from happening? Perhaps he wished for his daughter to apply with the Symbiosis Commission for Joining.

Trellis quickly dismissed the idea. One would be hard-pressed to find more than a handful occurrences of the Commission awarding a half-breed with something that was so prized and revered in Trill society.

Trellis was aware that his superior officer had lost his wife several years before being posted to Deep Space 5. He had believed that the man was strong enough to put aside his grief and move forward with his duties. However, this current case was questioning that belief.

"Then what shall we do with the detained Ferengi, sir?" Trellis asked.

“Release them,” Caleb said, recovering himself. He gave his uniform a tug. “Ah will give them my most sincere groveling apology and they can go back to the embassy. If we have any further questions, interviews will be done in the embassy, as well.”

Trellis' jaw tightened as he sighed inwardly. "Yes, sir. If there is nothing further, then I will begin processing the release of the detainees." He said with obviously reservation.
