Mission: Eye of the Beholder
Location: Deck 182 - Civilian Quarters
Timeline: BACKPOST Before - "Emergence"

Ensign Usharn and Chief Petty Officer Walsh arrived at the designated quarters. Security had received a call that a burglary had taken place and the owner of the residence and just discovered what had happened. Neither Security officer was in a particular rush considering there had been no report of violence or any injuries. CPO Walsh was hoping that this would be nothing more than a simple "Respond and Report". If so, then he could get back to planning his upcoming trip to Risa.

A middle-aged human answered the door immediately when they rang the chime. His face was etched with a combination of age and worry. His salt-and-pepper hair was thinning at the front but long enough to be tied in a pony tail at the back. "Hey, come on in," he said. He gestured them inside.

"Good morning, sir. I'm Ensign Usharn and this is Chief Petty Officer Walsh, station security." The Andorian responded to the man. "We received information that your quarters were burglarized." He stated as they entered the quarters and began to look around. "Do you have any idea how the person or persons were able to get into your quarters?" He asked.

"No idea," the man replied. "I was out for a while. When I got back there was no sign of forced entry but I knew right away that important things were missing. I thought the security features in these rooms were supposed to be better than the average hotel. You know, this being a Starfleet installation and all?" The tone of his voice was calm but obviously irritated.

"What items have you found to be missing?" CPO Walsh stated as he continued to look around the room. The room did not appear to have been ransacked nor was there any sign of weapon usage to get into the man's quarters.

"My hobby is military collectibles," the man said, seemingly choosing his words with care. "I collect all sorts of things. Uniforms, equipment, and some weapons. The items stolen are several blades and one firearm."

The Ensign and CPO stopped and looked at each other for several moments before turning back towards the man. "Sir, exactly what type of firearm did you notice was stolen?" Ensign Usharn asked.

"It's a TR-116 infantry combat rifle," the man said.

"Sir...station regulations require that firearms be registered with Security Department Armor Officer." CPO Walsh said as he did an about-face and looked at the man directly. "We do that for accountability reasons..." He said as he got closer to the ultimate answer that he was afraid of hearing.

"Sir, did you register that weapon upon initial arrival on the station?" He asked.

The man shrugged. "I didn't think it was necessary. The weapon has been completely deactivated. Also it was locked in its case and I had no intention of taking it out. It's only valuable as a collector's item."

"That 'collector's item' as you refer to it is a dangerous piece of contraband that was created for the purpose of fighting the borg and you didn't think that it was important enough to inform the Security Department that you were keeping it in an unsecured storage!?!" The Andorian Ensign said, his voice filled with agitation as he walked through the "living room" area of the man's quarters.

The man became defensive and flustered. "Uh...well...how could I have known!?" He paced back and forth and scratched his head. "Like I said, it's deactivated. I wasn't planning to shoot any Borg with it!" Then remembering that he was the aggrieved party he became irritated and pointed his finger at the security officers. "You know, maybe if you were doing your jobs this wouldn't have happened!"

The Andorian Officer was prepared to respond to the man in the same tone. His shoulders were pitched back and his eyes narrowed as he took a step towards the 'collector'. Fortunately, the Andorian was stopped by the stiff arm of the accompanying Chief Petty Officer. "Sir, could you show us where exactly the TR-116 was stored?" Chief Walsh said calmly to the collector.

"Sir," Chief Walsh continued, "It might be best if you contacted Commander Aldrex and let him know the situation we have going on here." He said to the younger, but still higher ranking Officer.

The Andorian had calmed down and nodded. "Roger, but don't you think we should include Lieutenant Trellis since he is Investigations?" The Ensign said to the seasoned Non-Commissioned Officer.

Chief Walsh looked at the Andorian with half of a smirk. "And interrupt a good hangover? I doubt it, plus we've got to get on top of this as soon as possible, he can fill out the paperwork that he enjoys so much." Chief Walsh replied as he began to follow the man towards the site of the theft.

The Andorian nodded in agreement. =/\= "Ensign Usharn to Commander Aldrex, sir we have a situation in the civilian habitat ring." =/\=

Up in Station Ops the XO tapped his commbadge while he read a report on his PADD. "Aldrex here. What kind of situation is it, Mister Usharn?"

=/= "Sir, we received a call about a burglary. We've responded tot he seen and we've been informed that one of the items taken was a TR-116 Infantry Combat Rifle" Ens. Usharn responded.

The XO frowned. "Was this weapon not secured in the security office?"

"No sir, the owner has informed me that he did not register it with Security because he said that he had deactivated it and was not planning on using it." Ens. Usharn replied. He had read reports about the weapon's capabilities. Even though it was never mass-produced by Starfleet, there were still enough prototypes available to give people a chance to collect them and use them on unsuspecting victims.

"Instructions, sir?" Ens. Usharn spoke.

Aldrex drew a deep breath and exhaled sharply. "Escort the gentleman to the security office for further questioning. Let's find out everything there is to know about this weapon. Its color, its accessories, its registration number. Where he got it from. Where he was taking it to, or more to the point to whom. Plus whatever you guys do when you open an investigation of this type. We'll do some internal scans up here and we'll get the word out that there's a loose rifle aboard."

"Aye, aye, sir. Ens. Usharn out." =\= The Andorian said as he returned to the Chief and the civilian.

"Sir, we'll need you to come down to the Security Office so we can continue to obtain information on any other items that were taken." Ens. Usharn stated. "While that is going on, we'll have a forensic team sweep your entire quarters for any clues that might assist us in recovering the weapon." He said as he took a step towards the door and gestured the other two to follow.

The gentleman went without a fight but made his indignation clear. "Yeah, I'll come. Since your little tinpot dictator insists on it. What's his name? Aldrex? Boy he sounds full of himself. I'll tell you what, even the Cardassians don't give me this much hassle. I'm a honest businessman and I resent being treated..."

They disappeared through the door and into the corridor.

===In an undisclosed location===

The man watched the live feed of what just transpired in the man who claimed to be a weapons collector. As the security personnel escorted his target away, he grinned slightly. Things were going exactly as planned.
