Summary

The Helios is a fleet vessel that was heavily damaged during an ion storm in 2386. For several years afterward she was laid up at Utopia Planitia Maintenance & Regeneration Center (a.k.a., the "Boneyard") and used as a source of spare parts for other ships.

By 2391 her condition had become so decrepit that she was finally scheduled to be scrapped. Then a group of Academy cadets, led by Tralian Isen, Mrin Caraway, Sharma Welyn, Kram Davis, and James Bradshaw, lobbyed everyone from the Academy Superintendent to the UFP President to spare the ship. They offered to restore it as their class project. And if successful the Helios would be added to the Academy's fleet of training ships. Starfleet agreed and handed the ship over to them.

The immediate problem was that there were no nearby yards available to take on such a major project. They were all otherwise engaged with maintenance of the regular fleet. Also, the cadets were forbidden from having the work done at a non-fleet yard due to the sensitive nature of some of the ship's on-board components. The cadets did an extensive database search and found Dyson Yards near Deep Space Five. The facility was ideal. It had knowledgeable personnel, all the equipment they needed, and access to a wealth of spare parts from the nearby station. Best of all it was little used due to its distant location.

Following a warp core installation and other repairs to make her spaceworthy, the Helios departed Utopia Planitia and made the long trip out to Deep Space Five. She arrived at Dyson Yards in the early months of 2392. Her refurbishment is still in progress.
