Personality & Traits

General Overview At the academy, Nate was very outgoing and well liked. He was a good student, and though choosing to be a tactical cadet, was a whiz kid when it came to computers. He's a team player, whole-heartedly believing that everyone has strengths and shortcomings and must work with others to make the galaxy a better place. He's certainly an idealist, almost naively so. Being close to graduation, he's ready to get on with his Starfleet career, but is also terrified all the same.
Strengths & Weaknesses Academy major: Tactical Strategies and General Security
Minors: Energy Systems; Computer operations

+A good working knowledge of Starship computer systems.
+A sound strategic mind (from an academic sense)
+Team oriented

~He's scrappy, but lacks experience.
~He's somewhat naive.
~Not a fan of working alone. He is very extroverted which is sometimes a detriment.
Ambitions He's at the beginning of his Starfleet career. Being so close to graduation, his current ambition is to have a productive Starfleet Career.
Hobbies & Interests Nate is lifelong learner. Currently, in his personal time, he is studying several of the sciences to gain a working knowledge of the universe. Current subjects include astrophysics (he took some physics at the academy), planetary geology, and Warp Mechanics. He's no scientist, but he'd like to think he can hold a conversation.

Personal History Nate was born in Spokane, Washington to Carl and Charlotte Matheson, both natives of the city. Nate's parents got lucky that the USS Tamerlane had returned to Earth for a new assignment at the end of Charlotte's pregnancy. She was granted maternity leave and stayed with family for a period of three months. When Nate had gotten to a point where he was settled enough, they returned to the Galaxy Class Tamerlane so the then Lieutenant JG Matheson could resume her duties as a Biologist. Nate's father, Carl, manned the Ten-Forward Lounge. He was quite popular, being an excellent host and bartender. He frequently had musical guests and had it been anywhere else, would have been quite a lucrative business.

Nate's formative years were quite "informative" when it came to his development. From an early age, he showed an interest in computers from both a software standpoint to a "take it apart, leave there for a while, then put it back together" standpoint as well. Being on an advanced and large starship, he had all the opportunities one might expect: good schooling, plenty of friends, and even very supportive Captain who loved children. During this period his father encouraged him to pursue study of kick boxing, somewhat part of a family tradition. Most of his family were, to some degree, reasonably proficient in some form of martial arts. His mother was a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. His father, an competitive jiu jitsu contender in amateur competitions, and his older brother, who studied kung fu and karate.

In his teenage years, Nate continued his studies in the general sciences as well as picking up a fair amount of knowledge of computers. However, he wasn't entirely sure that was the way he wanted to go in life. From roughly age fourteen, he definitely knew he wanted to join Starfleet, to follow in the footsteps of his mother, brother, and maternal grandfather, who upon his retirement, joined them on the Tamerlane. He was certainly encouraged to do so, and upon his graduation from high school, was one of three Tamerlane children to get the Captain's recommendation for Starfleet Academy. All three of the students took their exam in a period of two weeks and all three scored well enough on the aptitude tests to earn entrance. Nate decided that he wanted to enroll in the tactical and security program, but hoped that he would have the opportunity to continue his studies of the sciences and computers.

Nate is currently in his final semester as a cadet at Starfleet academy. While most cadets participate in a cadet cruise, he was selected for something a little closer to a "study abroad" option. He was assigned to Deep Space 5 for his capstone cadet experience. He was eager to go, for certain, but entirely unsure of what he was going to face.
